Old wallpaper in Seattle homes
Seattle has a large stock of early and mid-1900s houses — Craftsman bungalows, Foursquares, Tudors and post-war homes — that have been redecorated many times. Removal projects here often uncover more than one layer: a 1990s paper over an older one, paper that was painted over, or a border hung on top of paint. Condos and newer homes usually have a single layer on drywall, which is quicker to remove but more sensitive to damage if the drywall was never primed.
What we check first
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| How many layers? | Each layer is removed separately |
| Is it painted over? | Paint keeps water out and slows soaking |
| Plaster or drywall? | Plaster tolerates water; drywall face paper can tear |
| Vinyl or paper? | Vinyl often peels off and leaves a backing to soak |
| Age of the home | Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint in older layers |
The removal process
- Floors, trim and outlets protected; original woodwork masked.
- Test area to choose dry stripping, soaking or steam.
- Paper and backing removed layer by layer.
- Adhesive washed off until the wall is clean to the touch.
- Damaged drywall sealed, plaster cracks repaired.
- Surface primed for paint or prepared for new wallpaper.
Older Seattle homes: mention the year your home was built. For pre-1978 homes, lead testing and lead-safe practices should be planned before any scraping or sanding.
Condos and apartments
In managed buildings, removal produces wet debris that has to leave the building according to its rules. Include work hours, elevator use and parking details in your request so the job can be planned around them — see wallpaper in condos and HOA buildings.
After removal
Once the paper is off, the wall may need repair or a skim coat before paint or new wallpaper. That is part of wall preparation. If new paper is going up, see wallpaper installation and our guides to painted-over wallpaper and removal in older homes.
What to send
- Photos of each wall and close-ups of seams, peeling edges and damage.
- A photo around an outlet with the cover removed (it often shows layers).
- Wall sizes and the year the home was built.
- What you plan for the walls afterward.

Questions
Can wallpaper be removed from plaster walls in Seattle homes?
Yes. Plaster usually handles soaking well. Cracks and loose areas that appear after removal are repaired before the next finish.
How do I know if there are several layers?
Look at a torn edge or around an outlet with the cover off. Send close-up photos and we will review them.
Can you remove wallpaper and then hang new wallpaper?
Yes. Removal, wall preparation and installation can be planned as one project.
