What Photos to Send for a Wallpaper Estimate

Which photos and details to send for a wallpaper installation estimate: wall shots, corners, outlets, existing wallpaper, damage and the wallpaper label. Seattle area:

Textured grey wallpaper behind an oval powder room mirror

Quick answer

Send one straight-on photo of every wall you want papered, close-ups of corners, windows, outlets and any damage or existing wallpaper, plus a photo of the wallpaper label or a product link. Take photos in daylight with the lights on, and add the width and height of each wall.

Key points

  • Wide shots show the size and layout; close-ups show the surface condition.
  • Daylight photos show texture and old wallpaper better than night photos.
  • The wallpaper label tells the installer roll size, repeat and paste type.
  • Measurements plus photos make the estimate more accurate.

Why photos matter for a wallpaper estimate

A wallpaper estimate depends on three things: the size and layout of the walls, the condition of the surface and the wallpaper itself. Photos let us review all three before a visit, ask the right questions and include the preparation the walls actually need. Good photos save time for both sides and reduce surprises on installation day.

The photo checklist

  1. Each wall, straight on. Stand as far back as you can and include the ceiling line and the floor. One photo per wall.
  2. The whole room from the doorway. This shows how the walls relate to each other and where the eye lands first.
  3. Corners. Inside and outside corners, especially where the pattern will start or end.
  4. Windows and doors. Include the trim; we plan cuts and pattern placement around them.
  5. Outlets, switches, vents and fixtures. Sconces, mirrors, towel bars and thermostats all affect the work.
  6. Surface close-ups. Hold the phone 12–18 inches from the wall. If there is texture, take one with a flashlight shining across the wall from the side.
  7. Existing wallpaper. Seams, peeling edges or a corner where you can see layers.
  8. Damage. Cracks, holes, water stains, torn drywall paper or patches.
  9. The wallpaper. The label (roll size, pattern repeat, batch number) or the product link.

Tips for useful photos

  • Shoot in daylight and turn the room lights on as well.
  • Keep the phone level; tilted photos make walls look out of square.
  • Clear small items from the wall if you can, or mention what will move.
  • Name the photos or number them in your message: "Wall 1 – bed wall, 12 ft wide."

Measurements to include

Width and height of each wall in feet and inches. For walls with a slope or a stair line, give the tallest and shortest height. Add the ceiling height if a ceiling is part of the project. Our measuring guide walks through it step by step, and the roll calculator turns the numbers into a roll count.

FAQ

Can you give an estimate from photos only?

Photos and measurements let us review the project and prepare an estimate for many jobs. Some walls need an on-site look, for example when there is old wallpaper or hidden damage.

How many photos should I send?

Usually one per wall plus close-ups of corners, windows, outlets and any problem areas — often 6 to 15 photos for a room.

Should I send a photo of the wallpaper label?

Yes. The label shows the roll size, pattern repeat, paste method and batch number, which all affect the estimate.
